Are you a Purple Cow?

Your brand is as good as dead if you're not...

Your brand is dead unless you’re a purple cow.

Now, before you come at me for comparing you to a mere bovine…here me out.

2 weeks ago, sitting on my living room couch, reading “Purple Cow“, I was hypnotized by Seth Godin, the marketing Einstein.

Imagine this. You visited one of the great grassy fields of New Zealand teeming with cows, black, white and brown.

All of a sudden you notice a purple one.

Now, which one will be etched in your memory? I am guessing not one of the brown ladies.

Your brand is just another one among 100s if not 1000s of others preaching the same exact thing as you.

What are the chances your target audience will remember YOU specifically when at the end of the day?

Low, close to none.

Only way to avoid this is to stand out.

“So what? Do I paint myself purple and run around screaming MOOO?”

Umm, you can but I suggest you don’t. Might attract the wrong kind of audience, the one with straightjackets…

But, you’re forgetting something.

You ARE unique.

No one on earth has lived the same life as you or experienced the same things as you.

Your past, stories and beliefs are your unfair advantage.

The secret behind the success of each and every brand you can name.

They all have a story and a unique angle of preaching a general idea. Yeah, they don’t come up with new ones, they just plate it differently.

Let’s take Keiran Drew as an example.

He is an ex-dentist not feeling the love of a traditional career and wanted to achieve something else. So hopped into writing. His unique angle is that he is methodical, all about the fine details and how small changes in wording can have drastic impacts.

Or Jasmine Alic from LinkedIn.

A single dad from Bosnia who never went to college but gives lectures about writing in colleges. He approaches writing from a purely psychological angle.

See? Same ideas, but different approaches with a different character voicing it.

Your brand needs a

  • character

  • back-story

  • unique beliefs

So sit back and think about it.

Who are you? What are the moments that stand out in your mind vividly?

Write them down (don’t skip this part) and now try to make connections.

Can you see a pattern?

Is their some specific aspect you’re more interested in?

Let me explain with me as an example. As a kid, I was always curious about how things worked.

I had this screwdriver that I would use to pry open remotes, alarm clocks, mechanical toys just to see what’s inside. I would put them back together later…even though it didn’t always work.

So back to the topic. I am all about experimenting and finding ways to connect "my stories" with some lesson for my readers.

Which makes my content authentic. In other words, "not easily replicable".

This is my unique stand. So who are you?

  • Are you that introverted soul who silently drinks in every small detail with their eyes?

💡Then you must be great at observing your target audience. You understand psychology and all the fine details that trigger your audience.

  • Or that extrovert who can instantly mingle with a gang of strangers?

💡Your connection skills must be top-notch. Community is your strong suit.

  • Or maybe someone who can effortlessly adapt to any situation?

💡Changing market trends and algorithm mood swings must be child's play for you.

  • Or or are you that someone who is always at the heart of a conversation?

💡Man, your engagements must be booming then. You know how to entertain and retain your audience.

Your past, your stories and quirks are the greatest tools at your disposal. Don’t let them rust away.

So, again…
